This is our hotel. vondice hotel is a historical heritage site, a former pumping station, mostly created from natural materials, recycled and handmade. 21 meters long and furnished with love makes it one of a kind. Today this is where you’ll come to expect luxuries like a king-sized bed (200×200 cm) with super deluxe mattress, a sunny first-floor balcony with views over the river and a private terrace. The centre of Amsterdam you’ll reach within 15-minutes. A bakery and supermarket you’ll find in in a 2 minute-walk. Because we have built with the unusual shape of the little house, you will find two more beds (180×60 cm) for adventurous children under the stairs.
This unique building stands at just 21 meters long and comes decorated with love. Everything in the hotel has been recycled, handmade and crafted to perfection. The king-size bed measures 2×2 meters and is designed with wood and steel. The mattress is entirely natural. Re-formed old steel iron grids create sun blinds on the glass roof, and layers of natural clay plaster and Dutch oak have been applied to the walls. With carefully considered ventilation it creates a healthier indoor climate. And with stairs that seem to float, each step has been cast and put in place into the structure. The kitchen, with a comfortable lounge, is equipped with a coffee machine, hot running water, dishes, cutlery, a hot plate and a microwave and a small refrigerator.

A turbulent history
This building was once a sludge return pumping station, which formed a part of the Amsterdam East water purification plant that covered the island. Working together with the three silos that tower above the houses a little further on, the last phase of the water purification process took place beneath this small building. Clean water was then pumped from the pumping station on to the canal on the west side of the island.
The water treatment plant, built in the 1970s, was then dismantled in 2006 because of the city’s greater need for housing. The two remaining pumping stations we see today were designed almost identically. The first, which is across the street is now the coffee house De Espressofabriek. In 2018 our team began the second reconstruction to form the vondice hotel, which opened in January 2021.
Our favourite spots
Our favourite spots
For Amsterdam’s museums, places of beauty, and famous canals, you should carefully check your travel guide; there’s simply too many places to mention and you really don’t want to miss out. For example, with Nieuwmarkt as a starting destination, you can sit and watch the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam passing you by. This neighbourhood is also famous for Chinese restaurants such as the Nam Kee. With bikes available from the hotel, or a five-minute walk to the tram, you can easily reach places such as the following.
In our opinion, Amsterdam-East or Amsterdam Oost is the most beautiful and pleasant part of Amsterdam. In the heart of Oost, you will find places like Javastraat, Dappermarkt, Oosterpark and Café Kuiper. In the Javastraat you’ll see small shops full of books, vintage, outfits, food and drinks with award-winning roti, falafel, herring and more. Neighbourhood supermarkets and other hotspots are all at your disposal. Just a short walk away and you suddenly find yourself at the Dappermarkt, the most affordable and multicultural market in Amsterdam, with stalls full of fabrics, clothing, vegetables, fruit and a whole range of curiosities unique to our culture. And a little further down you can enter Oosterpark, with 100-years of history, greenery, ponds, and the famous green parakeets, with historic buildings all around. Finally, you can settle down in café Kuiper, an old-fashioned Amsterdam pub. Take a moment to enjoy a great lunch with a gentle tipple.
Visit the IJmeer, where you can enjoy our European protected nature reserve, with catering facilities on the beach. Here you can also surf, swim and paddle board. This beach is located in the middle of IJburg, a new city district built from the water: six islands full of architectural highlights. In the small harbour, (created by the residents themselves and enclosed by houses), you can enjoy the welcome of cosy cafes and restaurants.
The Espresso Factory is located next to vondice. As the second pumping station that belonged to the water purification plant, it has been preserved, and carefully developed by the Von Dice team. Now you can buy the best coffee, tea, biscuits and wine in town! You will also find with a 3-minute walk the Sportheldenbuurt, where you can also find two local supermarkets for all your daily groceries.
This is the Dutch polder! With grass, cows, ditches and fields. Why not venture out into nature on winding roads with farms and meadows, until you reach the Toren van Ransdorp, which makes this small monumental village famous. Built in Gothic style around 1525 the tower is 32 meters high, and when funds ran out it was left incomplete – hence the flat tower, which you can climb if you want!
